Go Green Grocery Shopping

Regular trips to the supermarket are great opportunities to change shopping habits for a positive impact on the environment. On your next trip to the store, consider these simple changes:

-Shop the perimeter of the store where you’ll find fresh vegetables, fruits, fish, and meats. Avoid the middle section of the store where junk and processed foods abound.

-Buy locally produced food to save energy and fuel spent on shipping. Local products are fresher and often don’t require as much packaging.

-Know your produce codes! If the code on the produce begins with the number “9,” the item is organic.  Organically grown produce uses less fossil fuel and releases fewer greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.

-Choose minimally or unpackaged items to cut down on petroleum-based plastic and other waste.

-Bring your own reusable shopping bags to reduce the amount of paper and plastic bags that litter our landscape, clog our streams, and end up in our landfill.

If you’re going to the grocery store, go green—you can make a difference!

Earth Day 2008

Get ready to celebrate our beautiful planet earth on April 22! Thanks to Senator Gaylord Nelson’s efforts in the 1960s, Earth Day was established to increase public awareness of the health and well-being of our earth and to teach us more earth-friendly living. Earth Day 2008 is expected to be the biggest celebration yet, and aims to rally our global community to help stop global warming. Events are planned worldwide and there are lots of fun ways to get the whole family involved—festivals, beach clean-ups, book fairs, tree and flower plantings, and recycling activities.

If you’d like to learn more about Earth Day 2008 events in your local area, go to http://ww2.earthday.net/earthdayevents2008.

So, what are you going to do for Earth Day? I plan to plant some flowers with Emily, eat an entirely organic dinner with my family, and go for a walk after dinner.
