Energy audit

Did you ever want to have an energy audit done on your home but didn't know how? With the cold winter months approaching, now is a great time. Here are some details.

  • Contact your local utility company (they sometimes offer free audits).
  • Contact a local energy assessment professional or home energy auditors (google home energy audit and your city name to get someone near you).
  • Do an energy audit yourself. Visit: http://hes.lbl.gov/
  • Here is the US Department of Energy's website with information about audits.

A professional assessment runs about $350 to $500 but will pay for itself with the energy savings you will benefit from if you make improvements.

Checking in...

I went to Dallas recently for the eWomen Network conference and was bombarded with marketing messages. It was a bit overwhelming at times but I had a great time anyway. I didn't go to the conference to build my business (I have just the right number of clients), I went for my personal development. I am going through a divorce right now and the conference really empowered me to remember how beautiful I am. What struck me most was the video montage at the end of the last day. It showed pictures of the women at the conference and every one of them was smiling and radiating their beauty. They might not have been "good looking women" (although some of them were), but they were all beautiful and smiling and radiating their good fortune. They all looked FABULOUS! That reminded me of the fact that anyone can be beautiful if they have a smile on their face and are enjoying life. It doesn't matter how big or how small you are, as long as you are happy--you are beautiful.

A friend of mine sent me a link to a blog post the other day and it reinforced that message. It is more about body image but the end result is the same--I am perfect just the way I am.

Here is that blog post if you are curious:

The author is an excellent writer and I was moved by her words. Happy Monday.

Earth Day 2008

Get ready to celebrate our beautiful planet earth on April 22! Thanks to Senator Gaylord Nelson’s efforts in the 1960s, Earth Day was established to increase public awareness of the health and well-being of our earth and to teach us more earth-friendly living. Earth Day 2008 is expected to be the biggest celebration yet, and aims to rally our global community to help stop global warming. Events are planned worldwide and there are lots of fun ways to get the whole family involved—festivals, beach clean-ups, book fairs, tree and flower plantings, and recycling activities.

If you’d like to learn more about Earth Day 2008 events in your local area, go to http://ww2.earthday.net/earthdayevents2008.

So, what are you going to do for Earth Day? I plan to plant some flowers with Emily, eat an entirely organic dinner with my family, and go for a walk after dinner.

Blackout sabbath?

Daylight savings now affords us another hour of light, though its power-saving intention appears debatable. Taking matters a step further, musician Rufus Wainwright proposes “Blackout Sabbath.” Inspired by the Northeast Blackout of 2003, the singer/songwriter has concocted a plan: unplug for 12 hours, from noon to midnight, on the summer solstice, June 21st. This really only means it’s dark for a few hours, but shutting off TVs, radios, computers, and other appliances will be tough on many, even if it’s Saturday. During this sensory deprivation, he suggests we think about saving the planet, claiming his approach is a down-to-earth alternative to the growing “glitzy” green movement.

This is definitely something to think about. Could I go 12 hours without a computer, TV or other light? I am going to try! Will you join me?

Sorry it's been so long

I was reading one of the blogs that I subscribe to and they had a link to a wonderful cartoon site. I know what you are thinking, cartoon site? Well, it is so funny and they talk about global warming. I never thought I would see humor and global warming in the same sentence but there you go! Anyway, check out the cartoon and let me know what you think. You want to look at the short called "It's A Jungle Out There! By Denis Thomopoulos." Have a great valentine's day!

Today is a green day...

because I wore all green. Isn't that silly, but I love the color green. It has always been my favorite color and now I can love it even more for what it represents. I am so glad that my passion for a color is also a passion about a way of life. I even have a green purse!

So, what shade of green are you today?

What does green mean to you?

So, I have decided that my first research project on being green will be all about "green grocery shopping." I am trying to figure out what that means to me. My first thought is organic; but it is more than that. It is also using organic cloth bags to bring your food home (paper or plastic? neither!); using special bags for the produce (instead of those horrible plastic bags) and purchasing things with the least amount of packaging.

I just ordered a couple of books about organic food and shopping so that should help. I was also planning on talking to my local Whole Foods to see what it means to them.

What does "green grocery shopping" mean to you? I would love to know.

For all the chicks who wanna be green...

Well, this blog is for all the chicks who wanna be green but aren't sure how. I have a family and a thriving business but I know I want to be more green (reduce, reuse, recycle). So, this blog will be my journey to change my family one little baby step at a time. Hopefully, by you watching me go through the journey will help you do so as well. I know that I enjoy doing things for the environment but I hate the political aspects that come with the whole green movement. This is my way to doing the green thing but it's about me not the politicians and changing the world. It's about little things that will make a big impact!
